Clinical practicum is a learning experience designed to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes necessary to function as competent entry level technologist/therapist. Your role as preceptor is invaluable to the success of the students at the Dalhousie School of Health Sciences.
Clinical practicum begins in early May each year. Students are scheduled in a clinical setting for 8 consecutive weeks. Successful completion of all components of the clinical practicum is mandatory and attendance is compulsory. Students absent from scheduled clinical experiences (for any reason) are required to make up missed time. Each clinical practicum is graded on a Pass/Fail basis and students must complete all requirements to receive a passing grade.
In addition to carrying out your daily job responsibilities, you will also assume the responsibilities of teacher, evaluator, advisor and mentor. As a preceptor you will be making available individualized learning experiences for the student. Initially the student will require close supervision, guidance, and direction as he/she carries out procedures in collaboration with you. You will find that as the student gains more experience, competence, and confidence the role of the preceptor becomes less directive and more facilitative.
To support you in your role as a preceptor we have developed and compiled information on how to effectively deliver the preceptorship program. In this section you will find articles such as “what is a preceptor?”, feedback tips, policies regarding levels of supervision, frequently asked questions and much more. Please contact the clinical coordinator if there is additional information you would like to be made available to you via our website.
